Jennifer Murphy, M.B.A.

Jennifer recently retired from George Mason University where she had been in the positions of Assistant Vice President for Research and Economic Development, Director of the Office of Technology Transfer, and Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs.  She started the university’s first technology transfer office in 2001.  In 2003 she was a driving force behind the creation of George Mason Intellectual Properties, Inc., a non-profit established to benefit the university by facilitating commercialization of its IP.  Under Jennifer’s leadership, 18 companies formed to advance the commercialization of Mason technologies.  Of those, nine are healthy, have funding and have a clear path to market and five have products and/or services in the commercial market.  Jennifer’s  primary involvement with these start ups was focused on vetting the entrepreneurs and creating license agreements that reflected the realities of the marketplace, while still creating future benefits for the university.  In order to accomplish those goals, she undertook vigorous assessments of the business climate and the potential for product development and sales within the markets to be served.

Jennifer Murphy did undergraduate work in history at the University of Maryland and received her MBA from American University in 1982.  She remains actively involved in the survey and advocacy committees of AUTM and the Contracts Accords and Partnerships projects of the University Industry Demonstration Project (UIDP).  She is one of the founders of the Academic Licensing Community of Virginia (ALCOVe).  Ms. Murphy has developed and participated in numerous panels involving issues at the forefront of technology transfer.
